The Perfect Smokey Eye
As a makeup artist I often get asked how to create that rock chick, dark , smokey eye. So since we’re heading into Autumn now and we’re starting to see the Winter collections creeping into the shops – with studs and eyelets galore, I thought I’d let you in on my fail safe technique for creating a sexy, smokey eye.
- First of all I like to use a neutral shade with a slight shimmer as a base – I love Illamasqua powder eyeshadow in Shiver.
- Then I’ll use a soft black eyeliner pencil like Stila Kajal Eyeliner Onyx to line along the top lashes – I like to soften this line with a smudge brush, MAC 219 is my favourite.
- Next using a soft eyeshadow brush I apply a black eyeshadow, such as Machine from Illamasqua’s new Dystopia collection, over the top of the smudged liner – blend it softly towards the socket line. At this point its entirely up to you how dark you want your smokey eye to be, layer your eyeshadow until you get the depth of colour you desire. Using the brush you smudged your liner with, apply a little of your black eyeshadow underneath the lower lashes too.
- I like to finish this off with a clean line of Illamasqua Cake Eyeliner in Mislead across the top lash line followed by lashings of Diorshow Blackout.
This dark sultry eye looks best teamed with flawless dewy skin with a flush of pink on the cheeks, Use Bobbi Brown Eye Brightener under the eyes and apply Illamasqua Satin Primer under your foundation with a pop of Bobbi Brown Pale Pink blush on the cheeks for a fresh healthy glow.
Finish it off with a slick of Palmer’s Dark Chocolate & Peppermint Lip Butter for a natural glossy lip.

You don’t have to just use black for this look either – it will work just as well with an inky dark blue, or a rich plum shade for a jewel toned variation. Experiment with using different colour combinations and see what you can come up with.
