Throughout 2010 P O S E D will feature a new, up-and-coming designer every month, right here on our Blog. This month’s featured designer is Alan Moore of Ten30.

Ten30

Spending your days watching beautiful models on the catwalk; swigging champagne at glamorous parties, this is how many people view the life of a fashion designer. Yet as up and coming Glasgow-based designer Alan Moore proves the reality is far from this: long days designing, stitching and on top of this two part-time jobs- that’s what really goes on behind the scenes.

Only relatively recently a graduate of Glasgow School of Art, Alan has gone it alone with his label ten30 much sooner than other designers would. With a degree in Textiles and placements with the likes of Laura Lees (London-based designer with a line for Top Shop) though, the building blocks to his career are clearly significant.

ten30 is described by Alan as being “really feminine, sexy and fun, not too serious”. Asked what celebrity he could see wearing ten30 Alan suggests Sophie Ellis Bextor: “Quirky, understated, doesn’t make a big deal but always looks good”.

Inspired by the likes of Basso and Brooke, ten30 clothes concentrate heavily on embroidery with all pieces (both day and night wear) hand-dyed fashioning individual colours. Unlike many mass produced labels ten30 clothes are individually made using traditional machine embroidery, helping to create some really unique looks.

Although he keeps up-to-date with popular styles Alan says he does not make an effort to incorporate the season’s trends in his own designs believing that by doing this his work is limited- “not everyone likes wet-look leggings”. Instead he is “unconsciously inspired”, particularly by his surroundings, hailing Glasgow as his inspiration where there is “always something going on, new people to meet, a massive music scene, everyone bounces off each other”.

To be able to do something which you genuinely love as your career is a privilege and one which Alan clearly realises and is not prepared to ever give up on. Although sticking to selling online and in small boutiques just now the uniqueness of ten30 suggests that it is not a line which will stay in the background for much longer.
